This site is designed to allow you to use different “styles”. Take a look at the “Alternate Styles” bar on this page. If you don’t like all the images that I use in my layout, try the “No Style” style. There aren’t many styles yet, but it is kind of neat.
But what about the “Hellcat Adv.” style? What’s the deal with that
icon beside it? Unfortunately, Microsoft
Internet Explorer is incapable of handling some of the effects used by
the Hellcat Adv. style. If you’re using Internet Explorer and try to
use the Hellcat Adv. style everything will still be readable, but it will
not look the way it should. Here’s what this page
would look like if you were viewing it in standards compliant browser
like Mozilla or Opera.
Why doesn’t this work in Internet Explorer? Part of the problem is that the newest version of Internet Explorer is three years old. Another part of the problem is with Microsoft who don’t feel that they should have to follow any standards that have been made by anyone other than Microsoft.
So why am I using styles that don’t work with Internet Explorer? I’m using CSS heavily on this page, which I believe to be the future of the World Wide Web. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer is years behind the current standards, and this is impeding the Internet from moving beyond the 1990s (or from moving beyond the last millenium, if you need more shock value).
While there’s other reasons to switch browsers (like the wonderful featureset and light weight of Mozilla Firefox), I believe that different browsers suit different people, and it seems there’s a very large number of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” people. Unfortunately, IE is broken, and it’s hurting the evolution of the Internet.
While this site degrades well — that is to say, it will work under any lesser browser (even Lynx!) — you may experience a nicer stay here at Firefang if you have a more standards compliant browser, like any of the Mozilla browsers or Opera.
